Bleach is a generic name given to a broad range of different products with differing chemical compositions. The pH level of specific bleaches varies. Bleach can be one of the most alkaline substances on the planet. It is this alkalinity in fact, which allows it to be such a powerful cleaning product. It does this by eroding and cleaning materials that would otherwise prove incredibly challenging if not impossible to remove.
