How often should incontinence pants be changed?

Incontinence pants should be changed according to your personal needs, or the needs of the person in your care. Ideally, incontinence pants should be changed and disposed of before they become too wet. Leaving it too long can lead to discomfort and increase the chance of leaks. It can also cause poor skin hygiene and unwanted odour.

Each type of incontinence pants will have its own level of moisture absorption, which can ensure you feel comfortable for longer. They will also be able to absorb different amounts of liquid, usually indicated on the packaging in millilitres.

Some brands even have a subtle wetness indicator, so you can easily and discreetly tell when it’s time to change the pants.

Many people who use incontinence pants find that using them for a short while is the best way to work out how often to change them. Experience can help you establish a routine, and understand your own comfort needs.

You may also want to change your incontinence pants before heading out in public. Most types are easy to remove and hygienically dispose of, but there may not always be a convenient place to change later on.
