Why should I purchase latex free gloves?

Latex free gloves allow you to stay protected while avoiding type I latex allergic reactions. Our range of latex free gloves are disposable, to ensure the spread of infection is minimised and that gloves are not worn across a variety of applications or tasks. We offer vinyl and nitrile gloves, to guarantee every level of protection is accounted for and also a range of colours to help minimise cross contamination in different areas. Latex free gloves are also recommended for dentistry and medical professionals providing examinations, to ensure patients are not put at risk of a latex allergy skin reaction while under their care.

What are the symptoms of glove allergies?

There are three main types of allergy associated with gloves: 1. Contact urticaria – type I This is a systemic allergic reaction to natural rubber latex proteins. Symptoms include hives, rhinitis, conjunctivitis, asthma and in severe cases anaphylaxis and hypotension. 2. Allergic contact dermatitis – type IV This is a hypersensitivity reaction and is normally localised to the skin that has been in contact with the glove. It is generally a reaction to the chemicals used in glove production and most commonly to the ‘accelerator’ type chemicals used in latex and standard nitrile gloves. Symptoms include red rash (erythema) and itching. 3. Irritant contact dermatitis This is a skin irritation that does not involve the body’s immune system response. It is caused by factors that dry and damage the skin, including the abrasive and drying effect of glove powder. Symptoms include dryness and redness.

What are the alternatives to latex gloves?

Latex free gloves are the most commonly chosen alternative, allowing users to benefit from the dexterity and comfort regular disposable gloves provide but without the adverse type I allergic reactions to latex gloves. These are usually created using vinyl or nitrile materials, with nitrile proving a more popular choice as it is stronger and offers better protection against tears, punctures and a range of chemicals. Should type IV allergy to chemicals in the gloves (accelerators – for example thiurams, carbamates, mercaptobenzothiazoles) present itself then low dermatitis potential / accelerator free nitrile or vinyl gloves would be recommended.

How common are latex allergies?

Latex glove allergies are becoming more common, with millions of sufferers in the UK alone. Latex allergy is caused by some proteins found in the latex. These proteins can also been found in other plants and are comparable to those found in some common foods (for instance avocado, banana, chestnut, kiwi, strawberries, grapes, cherries, tomatoes, potatoes, apples); so, if you are allergic to any of these then you could be prone to latex allergy. As part of an employers’ duty of care, a risk assessment should be conducted prior to the use of latex gloves and an employer should ensure that alternative gloves are available for those who require gloves but are susceptible to allergic reactions.
